Our saju calendar follows Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) solar-term data. When setting the Hour Pillar, we correct for true solar time— Korea Standard Time is based on 135°E, but the Korean Peninsula’s central longitude is about 127.5°E, so we subtract 30 minutesplus the equation of time, which changes by date (about 14–44 minutes depending on the day), to convert to actual solar time. We also apply all 12 daylight saving periods(1948–1951, 1955–1960, 1987–1988) and the Mar 21, 1954 – Aug 9, 1961 period when Korea Standard Time was based on 127.5°E. Without this correction, people born in these periods get an Hour Pillar that’s off by one. Birth dates are entered in the solar calendar (if you only know your lunar birthday, please convert it to solar first). Because the Month Pillar is set by solar terms, the result is the same whichever calendar you count by, as long as it’s the same day.
